Simply to say, Cufon is a technology that allows us to use non standard fonts for a theme (yes any theme, it does not need to be WordPress theme).

Even though cufon non standard web fonts, it is generally recommended for web elements like h1, h2, h3 header tags. And you can also use it for titles. Sometimes the titles can be just “span” elements. Still you can apply cufon to them.
